The 2008 Tickell Quire Organ was built with accompanimental duties as its primary purpose. However, Christopher Allsop, with this first CD recording, puts the instrument through its paces with an unusual variety of solo repertoire and transcriptions. It’s certainly not your usual selection of organ lollipops – here Alain’s dreamy Deux Fantaisies sit alongside an Air by Arthur Somerville, and four Spielstücke miniatures by Hugo Distler complement Donald Hunt’s playful tribute to former Worcester organist Thomas Tomkins. Tickell’s reeds lend themselves well to Bonnet’s emotional In Memoriam – Titanic. The disc concludes with Allsop’s own fine transcription of Shostakovich’s Festive Overture.
