Celebrating Hapsburg dynastic patronage, this clever anthology covers 150 years of sublime, sumptuous creativity with the contrasted structures and sonorities of works by Josquin, Isaac, Senfl, Gombert, Pierre de la Rue, Crequillon, Clemens non Papa, Morales, Tallis and Lobo, sung with a rapt, almost magical concentration by Stile Antico. Superbly recorded, it is a masterclass in outstanding breadth of interpretation, balance and total teamwork. The rare all-female alto line lacks little that falsettists provide, and the group’s ‘workers co-operative’ ethos continues to reap dividends with, on this occasion, results almost approaching perfection.
