This is a must for anyone interested in the byways of 20th-century music: marvellously inventive, challenging music seen through the eyes of a great interpreter and his compatriots. Zimmerman’s (re-recorded) sonata brings even more committed playing and vastly better sound, while the quintets trace a path from a Shostakovich-like soundworld of the First to the deeply personal, searing masterpiece that is the Second. Enthusiastically recommended.
