An occasional visitor to the Philharmonie, on the strength of this blistering Shostakovich eighth Berglund must have been a welcome one. In an especially bleak reading, the cathedral of sound he creates is at once hugely refined and grippingly raw. Mustonen’s desiccated approach suits the Stravinsky, and the 2001 live recording somehow misses nothing.
