Alongside the previously released rags, blues and commentaries on satie’s compositions, this album offers the recently recorded Vitalitas Variations, showing a different side to Dickinson. The variations’ gentle, subtly worked introspection is a counterpoint to the zippy, joyous wit of the other tracks. Some pigeonhole Dickinson as eccentric, but what permeates all his works is the essential delight music should offer.
