After the tub-thumping of the bellicose Remembrance Overture, composed in the shadow of the First World War, and the Perzeus overture, the symphony offers only brief respite from rhythmic drive. Dutch composer Jef van Hoof was, it seems, a master of the pleasantly predictable. The English liner notes are studded with errors.
