The basis of Mihailo Trandafilovski’s Strike Flow is simple: exploring the contrast between percussive chords and melodic flow. Yet, using colour contrasts offered by winds, piano and strings, and dipping into folk music from Macedonia, he sustains interest for 11 minutes. The disappointment is that the other works in the album show little advance beyond cleverness – apart from some abrasive dynamism in the Quartet.
