Having cut his teeth on an impressive disc of Prokofiev’s ‘war’ sonatas, Kozhukhin proves himself an incisive and thoughtful interpreter of Haydn. His grace, lyrical fluency and sensitivity to every aspect of these works is impressive, humour never overdone, with a lithe energy throughout. It’s a shame then that another sonata, or even two, could have filled this 52-minute disc.
