Still was a near-contemporary of Britten and Still’s neglect (both living and posthumous) is hard to understand: he was well-connected and wrote prolifically, albeit in an incisive and (unfashionable?) tonal style, so it is thanks to the BMS that this welcome disc has seen the light of day. This young ensemble relishes the challenges here – and at Naxos’s price this should be snapped up.
