While the piano quintets have received two fine recent recordings, and his mature quartets have been championed by such ensembles as the Griller Quartet, Bloch’s youthful 1896 string quartet is new to disc. The young Swiss ensemble play this, and a selection of shorter works, with touching conviction, although the close-recorded sound does not quite do them justice.
