Sung, played and conducted with impressive concentration, energy and commitment, this will have made a huge impression in the theatre: Ildar Abdrazakov in particular simply inhabits the title role like no recent challenger, and Tcherniakov uses dreams (and back projection) imaginatively. On the small screen, however, the effect is compromised.
