This CD offers a vigorously lively performance of the original and more unadorned scoring for strings with timpani and the three trumpets that enliven the Benedictus, a more pleasing sound in this context under the exacting leadership of Martin Pearlman, the 1973 founder and musical director of Boston Baroque. The group of soloists is led superbly by Mary Wilson, whose clarity and warmth add immense pleasure to a presentation to value. Additionally, a worthy bonus is the crisp performance of one of Haydn’s last and most endearing symphonies.
