Two centuries after Daquin’s tenure at Notre-Dame, the tradition of improvised noëls before Midnight Mass was taken to new heights by the remarkable virtuosic talent of Pierre Cochereau. Lovers of the Cochereau legacy will welcome this release from Solstice of three Christmas improvisations (from 1970, 1974 and 1980) alongside an Easter Partita sur ‘O Filii et Filiæ’ (1979). The best is saved till last: a Prélude, Adagio et Choral varié sur ‘La Marseillaise’ from 1968. Before the patriotic bravura of the finale comes a real breadth of emotions and a sublime Adagio. Naturally these old live recordings come complete with the vagaries of a noisy public.
