Sabadus also has a new solo disc out this month: Mozart Castrato Arias from Oehms Classics. The German countertenor performs arias created by Mozart for those fêted unfortunates, ranging from Lucio Silla (1772) to La clemenza di Tito (1791), and throws in ‘Voi che sapete’ as a bonus, though Cherubino was created by a woman. Sabadus’ voice is beautifully showcased: there is a strong sense of line and sweetness of tone, plus his characters are suitably differentiated. Just listen to the assured and poised opening of ‘Dolce d’amor compagna’ (from La finta giardiniera) and the gently ascending phrases that follow to appreciate the technical assurance that Sabadus possesses. Michael Hofstetter conducts the Recreation-Grosses Orchester Graz with sensitivity, some scratchy string sound apart.
