‘An organ for Michelangelo,’ exclaimed Widor after giving the inaugural recital on the new Cavaillé-Coll organ of St Ouen. Captured in all its glory on this double SACD, the instrument in the hands of Christian Schmitt sounds as lyrical and fresh as when new. There are many recordings of these symphonies available but a lot of love and care has gone into this CD (with excellent liner notes), making it a welcome addition to the catalogue. This is also the first recording using the new edition by John Near – the result of a painstaking review of up to eight different editions.
