Do we need another new recording of the Saint-Saëns’s ‘Organ’ Symphony? Well, yes, when it is the first opportunity to hear France’s only concert hall organ (the newly-restored Cavaillé-Coll formerly in the Palais du Trocadéro) captured so dramatically in DTS-HD on a Blu-ray audio disc. There are no great histrionics here, just really well balanced, thoughtful playing. Slatkin’s handling of the orchestra delivers the most lyrical rendition I’ve heard, especially in the Adagio. Cyprès et Lauriers is a real treat, with Cyprès demonstrating the symphonic breadth of the original Cavaillé-Coll pipework, before the orchestra joins for the more exuberant Lauriers – a WWI victory celebration.
