St John’s choir again meets the highest standard. Despite the relatively dry chapel acoustics, a warm sostenuto is achieved by the rich blend of men and boys, and dynamics are fully expressive of the texts. The content is tantalising: Poulenc’s Petites prières de Saint François d’Assise and Quatre motets pour un temps de pénitence; the Messes solennelles of both Vierne and Langlais, which owe much to spectacular playing by organ scholar Edward Picton-Turbevill; and Messiaen’s motet O sacrum convivium. There are decent sleeve notes too. If you buy one choral recording this year, make it this one!
