Since 1956 (then under the direction of Peter Hallock), Seattle’s Anglican cathedral has observed the office of Compline every week. Here, in a tribute to Hallock’s commitment, is a mix of traditional Compline plainchant with unaccompanied psalm settings by Hallock, which add variety to a weekly liturgy. Atmospheric and clear, this is an interesting take on traditional form. Those expecting an ‘English’ accent to their chant should look elsewhere; but the soundworld here and the carefully written psalm chants, as with those of Gelineau, bear repeated listening and provide the vehicle for meditation that the recording sets out to achieve.
