We’ll never know if the four voices of the Orlando Consort sound like their medieval forebears, but I can’t imagine that there were finer original performances of Machaut’s secular music than have appeared so far in their complete survey of his works. Volume 2, The Dart of Love, is packed with pleasures: some instrumental involvement might have been ideal, but with singing so elegant and interpretations so subtle and sublime, one feels no lack.
