Signum promises a series of discs from Contrapunctus exploring the vast treasury of the Baldwin Partbooks. Off to a promising start with In the Midst of Life featuring Byrd, Tallis, Taverner, Sheppard and others on the subject of death, they selected rarities alongside well-known works in an organically flowing programme, with every detail cherished. There’s lovely balance and clarity of sound from as fine a clutch of voices, especially characterful at the lower end, as one might wish, directed with breadth and sympathy by Owen Rees.
