Heinrich Schütz toiled through the tragedies of the 30 Years War and his heartfelt settings of Luther’s Deutsches Litanei – one of which precedes the Matthäuspassion in volume 11 of the complete Schütz from expert interpreters Dresdner Kammerchor – is etched with the elderly composer’s longing for peace. Clarity and refined expression with nimble, precise singing from excellent soloists and tastefully understated interpretations hold the attention throughout.
