Schiff opts for an 1820 Brodmann instrument (his own, housed in Bonn’s Beethoven-Haus where these recordings were made), and it sounds glorious: its tone and action seem ideally to suit these works. Not surprisingly, his tempi are slightly more flowing than they were on Decca’s Bösendorfer; let us hope there is more to come.
