Prokofiev’s second concerto is one of his most personal utterances, its mammoth first movement cadenza seething with anger at the death of a friend. Gerstein seizes it by the scruff of the neck and never lets go in a performance of stunning power and control. If the Tchaikovsky is slightly less distinctive, it is nevertheless worth hearing, especially in such a fine recording.
