According to UK jazz icon Courtney Pine, ‘there is nothing like performing in a duet for bringing out the intimacy of great songs’. Odd, then, that this CD should be credited to Pine alone. While he chose the songs – ten of his favourite ballads, from Amazing Grace to Come Sunday – it seems ungracious to deny Zoe Rahman a joint credit, given that duets require two people. Pine seems to favour a surprisingly attenuated, edgy bass clarinet tone. This can make listening hard work, as can the disc’s limited range of tempos and textures. Rahman contributes sensitive support and some attractive solos, but her own releases, where she has more freedom, are the place to hear why she is one of the UK’s finest young jazz pianists.
