In Gergiev’s hands, the wry humour of the symphony’s outer movements contrasts effectively with a serenely flowing moderato, while the largo has an epic, Mussorgskian grandeur. The key work here though is the concerto, intensely dramatic with dazzling, high-octane bravura from Kavakos. The range of colour and depth of projection captured here is essential listening, a notable new recording of a much-recorded work.
