Planned, it seems, before McCabe’s death earlier this year, this reissue of pioneering Decca recordings is a poignant and timely tribute to a great composer-pianist. These four-decades-old performances have not been bettered in the intervening years – the chaconne from 1916 is masterly – and if the sound is slightly diffuse, this material has surely never sounded better.
