What could easily have been simply a film of a student concert is in fact a riveting, invaluable conspectus of this remarkable woman’s piano sonatas. A lifelong champion of new music, and of Ustvolskaya in particular, Lubimov is of course superb in the brief sixth sonata, yet it’s perhaps a tribute to him as a teacher that the five hand-picked Moscow Conservatory students are so consistently distinguished in the other works that make up this journey.
