The premise of this fascinating disc emerged from two discoveries Kevin Bowyer made recently: a well-maintained but otherwise untouched III/39 Norman & Beard instrument of 1904 in Woburn, and the gift of some back copies of The Organ Loft, a periodical published between 1900 and 1915. Here are 18 tracks of melodies, toccatas, lullabies, marches, choruses and nocturnes, sounding like lost pieces by Whitlock, Hollins, Elgar and Lemare but all written by forgotten names that appeared in those volumes. Decently researched sleeve notes pinpoint the composers and describe this example of N&B’s finest work. Bowyer’s interpretation is stylistically spot on, and the musical results are beguiling – I challenge listeners not to beam throughout!
