The history of great pianists is a history of great personalities, from Liszt and Chopin to Haskil and Horowitz. All of these made the music live and stamped it with their own unmistakable character. The most arresting feature of these superbly remastered reissues, by contrast, is precisely their anonymity; their emotional tepidity; their dramatic stasis. Nowhere, indeed, for all the undoubted beauty and technical elegance on offer, do we encounter the flamboyance and exaggeration (and, yes, the personality) associated with the pianism of the so-called ‘Golden Age’.
