John Law’s trio music is becoming ever more eclectic, chiefly in its range of sources though also in its sound palette. The title track (it’s a line from a poem by his daughter) was inspired by ‘a two year study’ of Radiohead and also samples the Brahms Requiem; Set Theory references EST; The Music of the Night draws on Law’s memories of an outdoor concert of African music and employs Ibo drum and glockenspiel, as well as tenor saxophonist Josh Arcoleo, who guests on four tracks. Law himself plays a range of keyboards and electronics, though the acoustic piano remains at the heart of his music, just as his core strengths remain his gifts for appealing melodies and catchy, propulsive rhythms. Seven Ate Nine has both and, together with I Sink Therefore I Swam, confirms his talent for punning titles also continues unabated!
