Peter Philips also worked away from home, and the Sarum Consort presents his Cantiones Sacrae Quinis et Octonibus Vocibus (Naxos 8.572832) originally published in Antwerp. It’s a lovely programme, full of contrast and craft, and while not all the singers are equally accomplished, these lively, affectionate and delicately moulded performances, recorded with warmth and clarity, may help to re-establish the reputation of a composer vastly celebrated in his own day.
