Museum shops need to create revenue for their institutions, so we must praise them for using their imagination to inspire quality products on the cheap. a cut above the average Past Times CD, The Genius of Illumination finds someone raiding the back-catalogues of The Sixteen and The Hilliard Ensemble to craft an anthology to accompany an exhibition of medieval and renaissance royal manuscripts in the British Library: a nice gift to introduce the novice listener to these repertoires but caveat emptor – do check your library to ensure that you don’t already own the CDs in which these tracks by Browne, Cornysh, Dufay, Tallis et al originally featured.
