Utterly convincing and theatrical are I Fagiolini in 1612 Italian Vespers . The brilliance and splendour of music by Palestrina, Monteverdi, both the Gabrielis, Viadana, Soriano and Barbarino is matched by coruscating performances from singers bringing all their considerable madrigalian expertise to bear alongside equally expert instrumentalists – it’s a triumph of scholarship and execution, beautifully recorded with tremendous presence in St John’s, Norwood, another credible stand-in for San Marco.
