DG engineers were on hand to capture a gala concert (even by Verbier standards) at the 2007 festival, curated by Argerich who surrounded herself with musical friends old and new. It is a mixed bag: Bashmet is mannered in the viola transcription of the Arpeggione, while Capuçon lacks the sheer punch Kremer brought to Bartók’s first sonata. Lang Lang is the partner in Schubert and Ravel duets: hardly idiomatic but there’s never a dull moment. Best of all is a quixotic, touching Kinderszenen: vintage Martha.
