This is volume 3 of Raml’s complete recording of Scheidt’s monumental Tabulatura Nova (1624), one of the impressive organ volumes published in the 1620s (cf Coelho, 1620; Titelouze, 1623 & 1626; Frescobaldi, 1624 and 1627; Arauxo, 1626). Vol.3 contains the liturgical repertoire: Lutheran Mass, nine Magnificats and seven hymns, so this is the CD equivalent of a reference book for consultation. The playing is solid and the organs are fine, but more liturgical context is needed (vocal alternatim plainchant at least) so that this continuous contrapuntal cantus firmus-based music has some relief and focus within its cultural ambience.
