This recording features the Flentrop reconstruction of the great ‘Reincken’ organ on which Bach famously improvised in 1720. A tour de force of detective work and organ building skill has integrated the 500 remaining pipes of the old organ surviving wartime destruction to produce an instrument of outstanding quality. De Vries plays with his usual clarity and imagination, the many colours and contrasts of the organ being well demonstrated. The magisterial pleno is most impressive, while the Reincken An Wasserflüssen Babylon gives him the opportunity to show off many varied facets of this wonderful organ. His concluding substantial improvisation continues to delight the ears. Highly recommended.
