This disc presents an interesting mixture of old and new music, with the first organ works of 85-year-old Cerha (nine Präludien and nine Inventionen of 2011/12) interspersed with chorales from Bach’s Orgelbüchlein and the four Duettosfrom Clavierübung III. Cerha’s style of writing is uncompromisingly austere and dissonant, no doubt growing from his associations with the Second Viennese School. Kogert gives clear and precise interpretations of both the Bach and Cerha, but the rather clinical acoustics of the Vienna RadioKulturhaus are not helpful to the music or organ by Schuke of 1983.
