A useful compilation and a good introduction to music associated with Louis XIV: Te Deums for ceremonial events, grands motets for daily worship in the chapel, and a plausible reconstruction of music heard at a court entertainment. Clearly designed as a Versailles musical gift package, the recordings date from 2013, 2004 and 2001, with no real information given about the music itself. The Du Mont motets are beautifully sung, and the instrumental music (Lully, D’Anglebert, Michel Lambert) for CD 3 is beautifully played. The Charpentier and Lully Te Deums contain extremes of tempi, with the singers very closely recorded.
