In this volume Paul Derrett samples six organs in Beverley. The music is well chosen to reap the best of each instrument, from early Italian pieces on the small Tickell organ in the RC church to Parry’s great Fantasia & Fugue in G and three Alain pieces on the Minster organ. Despite some instruments suffering from lack of restoration, Derrett draws musical performances with great conviction, particularly Elgar’s charming Vesper Voluntaries. One must forgive noisy actions in more energetic works like William Faulkes’s Pedal Etude in what is otherwise a fine appraisal of the quality of instruments available in this Yorkshire market town.
