This enjoyable 2-CD set has what is possibly the worst presented liner notes ever seen, with a serif-caps typeface that is basically unreadable. And with 70-plus very short pieces spread over a couple of well-filled discs, English translations of the originals would have enhanced our appreciation. But don’t be deterred, because the music is absolutely delightful and its rendition herein totally captivating. Well-balanced, youthful voices convey so much of the character of this music, especially the unaccompanied items, and Dobszay coaxes the absolute best from his forces. You probably wouldn’t wish to listen to both discs right through, but they are perfect for dipping into – and you can start almost wherever you want and find delights. In its way, an important release of little-known repertoire.
