Salvator mundi – The Purcell legacy is the debut disc of a new label from the University of St Andrews. The legacy of the title traces a line from Purcell to William Jackson via Blow, Clarke, Handel, Green and Boyce. The programme is original and well researched, with the Fitzwilliam String Quartet adding a vital professional glow to the expressively directed if technically undercooked and, occasionally, overstressed voices of St Salvator’s Chapel. The boxy acoustics of Kilkenny Parish Church do nothing to help.
