Admired by J.S. Bach, and one can see why, Reinhard Keiser’s Markuspassion is a beautifully constructed work of power, intelligence and grace. The Ensemble Jacques Moderne’s sinuous singing, expressing the text with understanding and tenderness, the almost visible halo around the voice of Thomas E. Bauer (Christus) and the nuanced tenor of Jan Kobow are among the salient features of this outstanding disc, recorded with a solemn spaciousness.
