This recording brings us to the ‘fifth evangelist’ himself and Arcangelo’s interpretation of Bach’s Mass in B Minor, with singing and playing of superlative commitment, elegance and quality. The heart-on-sleeve intensity of Jonathan Cohen’s interpretation drenches every detail. Vocal grain adds texture to every line: strength and delicacy, declamation and dance, warmth and depth – it’s all there, and a team of wonderful soloists crowns a delightfully paced and exquisitely ornamented performance, radiant with grandeur and passion. The theatre of the Mass, wondrously realised, blows the listener away with a near-perfect blend of drama and devotion – a spiritual joy from beginning to end.
