horizontal line

The motets of J.S. Bach are consistently demanding and are well handled here under John Scott’s direction. There is only subtle continuo accompaniment, making apparent the great many notes for the choir. The lyricism the trebles achieve and the sensitive phrasing and vigour the whole choir communicates is attractive. To be highly critical, there are some times when the treble line could be better supported in the upper register and intonation a little tighter, but that is of scant consequence. There are full texts and good sleeve notes from John Butt. For authenticity of ensemble and musicality of interpretation, this release is a treat.
