This live performance sees Victoria’s Missa Alma Redemptoris Mater interspersed with other works, and Theofanidis’s four Messages to Myself performed in two groups. Theofanidis portrays the different texts perceptively and with imagination, the singers responding instinctively to the music. Bach’s Der Geist hilft unser Schwachheit auf is given a lively performance by The Yale Voxtet; but by far the outstanding interpretation is given to David Lang’s again, to a text adapted by the composer from Ecclesiastes. For me, Lang is one of the most interesting composers currently writing in America. Sounding deceptively simple, this piece requires great skill and breath control combined with pp singing, and Yale Schola Cantorum are at their best. This distinctive composer has a gift of creating a memorably haunting atmosphere.
