While on the subject of Meyerbeer, look out for Sergio Gallo playing Liszt’s Transcriptions from Operas by Meyerbeer; based on Le Prophète, Robert le Diable and L’Africaine, it’s interesting to hear how Liszt interpreted Meyerbeer’s themes, and how Gallo manages such a welter of notes. He controls his rolled chords and pedalling judiciously to avoid musical soupiness, keeping tunes to the fore whilst only occasionally becoming lugubrious.
