Caught live at Mondsee in 1997, Schreier is at his autumnal best with peerless legato and a focused commitment that is matched in spades by Schiff. What will be less appealing to non-German speakers is the interpolation of linking poems Brahms didn’t set: a CD player can of course be programmed, but some speech is recorded irrevocably over music.
