This volume presents some of the last works of Bossi before his death (at sea) in 1925. His final two works, Tre momenti francescani and Meditazione in una cattedrale, clearly illustrate a shift in harmonic language and phrase structure following the influence of Clause Debussy. This dreamy romanticism is perfectly matched by the 1932 Balbiani/Vegezzi-Bossi organ and acoustics of Como Cathedral. The two other instruments – the Serassi (1795)/Balbiani (1932) organ in Chiesa di San Martino Vescovo, Calolziocorte, and the Balbiani (1920)/Aletti (1927) organ in Santuario Vecchio, Oropa – are also chosen carefully (being contemporaneous with the music recorded), providing welcome variety and serving to enhance the differences between the two version of Opus 78 recorded here. The whole project is intelligently and beautifully presented and highly recommended.
