Ensemble für frühe Musik Augsburg, largely masculine in form and well-endowed with instruments (harp, recorder, psaltery, vielle), uses its collective imagination to entertain without straining at the finer points of historically informed performance practice in Göttliches Licht , their 1997 tribute to Hildegard of Bingen only now released in the UK. The instrumental improvisations delight but the male voices do not: if the outstanding Sabine Lutzenberger’s genuine affinity with this repertoire had been allowed full rein it might have been more about divine light than human obfuscation.
