There’s no want of illumination in Eduardo Paniagua’s mission to record the entire œuvre of Alfonso X ‘El Sabio’ with Music Antigua. The five Cantigas de Roma are realised in their entirety with distinctive Moorish instrumental sonorities combining in sublime synergy with voices in a terrifically immediate recording. Once again it is a woman, Julieta Viñas, whose clarity, warmth and tonal subtlety impresses, but the male voices are also excellent and the storytelling, whether spoken or sung, is of the highest order, evoking the racial melting-pot of pre-re-conquest Andalucia.
